The company and its vision
Can you tell us about the origin of Yuniboat? How did the idea of creating a shipyard specializing in boat reconditioning come about?
Yuniboat was born from a shared passion for the sea, respect for the environment and positive impact industry. We noticed that a large number of boats were being scrapped or abandoned when they could still have a second life. This is how the idea of creating an experimental shipyard specializing in reconditioning came about. We wanted not only to preserve natural resources, but also to offer a sustainable and economical alternative to boating enthusiasts to create a reconditioning industry in the recreational boating sector, by offering ranges of guaranteed reconditioned boats.
What motivated you to adopt an eco-circular approach in boat reconditioning?
The eco-circular approach was an obvious choice for us. It is about reducing our ecological footprint while maximizing the value of existing resources. By reconditioning boats in an eco-circular way, we extend the life of the boat, which avoids the production of new materials and excessive consumption of resources. It is an environmentally friendly approach, but also beneficial for customers in terms of cost.
Does your eco-circular reconditioning approach encounter any challenges? If so, which ones?
Yes, like any innovation, our approach faces challenges. One of the main challenges is to change mentalities and encourage boat owners to opt for reconditioning rather than abandoning their boat. In addition, the reconditioning process can sometimes be complex due to the initial condition of the boats, which requires advanced technical skills, constant adaptation and, above all, a capacity for boat expertise.
The reconditioning process
Can you explain the main steps of the boat reconditioning process at Yuniboat?
The reconditioning process begins with a complete assessment of the boat’s condition. Then, we proceed to the reconditioning of the boat and its accessories, in general, 70 to 80% are original parts reconditioned to be in this dynamic of circular economy. We change to new everything that concerns safety while integrating modern improvements to optimize the performance, durability and improve the environmental impact of the boat. Finally, each boat goes through a testing phase to ensure it is ready to sail safely.
Is there a category of boat for which the demand for reconditioning is greater?
Motorboats between 5 and 7 meters are the most in demand, but overall, all boats are reconditionable. For example, we also recondition 14-meter sailboats and speedboats.
How does your boat reconditioning system differ from a simple repair or maintenance?
Unlike a simple repair or maintenance, reconditioning at Yuniboat consists of a complete overhaul. We don’t just fix what’s broken; we modernize the boat, make it more environmentally friendly and extend its lifespan. This goes far beyond a simple reconditioning.
The ecological impact
What are the ecological benefits of boat reconditioning at Yuniboat?
The main ecological benefit is the reduction of the carbon footprint. By avoiding the manufacture of a new boat, we save tons of raw materials and energy. In addition, we recycle and reuse as many materials as possible, which reduces waste and conserves natural resources.
Do you have partnerships with other companies or organizations as part of your eco-circular approach?
Yes, we work with several partners, including suppliers of recycled materials, environmental organizations and other companies in the maritime sector. These partnerships allow us to strengthen our eco-circular approach and develop even more sustainable solutions. We are labeled Ruptur, Pôle Mer Atlantique, member of the National Institute of the Circular Economy, obviously involved and partner of the APER, the FIN and very active for the nautical sector, particularly with schools.
The future of Yuniboat
Is Yuniboat currently working on any innovations or future projects?
Absolutely, we are constantly looking for new innovations to improve our reconditioning processes. Currently, we are exploring the integration of positive impact technologies such as electric motors, biofuel but also more virtuous maintenance and renovation products… We also have expansion projects to meet the growing demand in France, we are in a fundraising dynamic to accelerate our development.
How do you see the future of boat reconditioning in France and Europe?
We strongly believe that boat reconditioning has a promising future, not only in France but also throughout Europe. With the growing awareness of environmental issues, more and more owners will turn to sustainable solutions such as reconditioning. We hope to see this trend grow and become more common in the coming years.
What advice would you give to boat owners who are still hesitating between buying new or reconditioned?
We would advise them to consider not only the economic aspects but also the ecological benefits. A reconditioned boat can offer the same performance as a new one, while being more environmentally friendly and often at a lower cost. It is a win-win solution, especially since our reconditioned boats are guaranteed.
THE SPOTYMAG BONUS
What is the economic impact of boat reconditioning for your customers? Are there significant savings to be made?
Reconditioning can indeed make significant savings. On average, a reconditioned boat can cost between 40% and 60% less than a new boat, while offering similar performance. If we also integrate propulsion technologies such as electric motors or the use of biofuel, we commit to savings in use.
